Day 58: Embracing Structure
Drinking the "Protein" Kool-Aid
For the past several weeks, I’ve been leaning into my project, focusing on the intersection of mindset and movement. While I’ve always valued intuitive living, I recently hit a point where I realized that true freedom doesn’t come from a lack of boundaries, it comes from using them intentionally.
I have seriously resisted structure, tracking and the rigid rules of fitness. I witnessed a lot of stress in people talking about how they have to go “work off this cupcake” or they were perseverating about a half inch on their waist and that stress didn’t seem worth it to me. But there can be another way and so I’m shifting gears. I am officially moving into my structured phase, and I wanted to pull back the curtain on why that is and what it looks like for me.
The New Protocol: My 4 Anchors
The New Protocol
I’m integrating 4 key anchors to ensure that I actually transform inside AND out on this journey:
Tracking and Calorie Awareness: YUCK, but I am framing this as information gathering only. It’s not about obsession; it’s about observing the data to ensure I am fueling my body adequately. I want to know, with certainty, that I’m providing the high-quality energy I need to fuel my life. Not nitpicking every kcal ingested or burned.
Intentional Resistence (Weight Lifting): Movement has become a healthy habit (yay), and I am now doubling down on resistance training. Hearing about sarcopenia (losing muscle as we age) I want to be sure I am building a stronger foundation for my health span and longevity. So my “go go years” keep on GOING! (Fact- muscle mass begins dropping 3-5% at 30 and rapidly declines in our 60’s!!)
Protein Optimization: This I resisted even more than tracking! The doctors and studies I follow have always proposed that we don’t need excess protein for optimal health. And, this is true- especially animal proteins that can cause a lot of problems. BUT, if we want to combat sarcopenia/muscle loss, the data shows we need to bump up (plant) protein and do resistance training.
AND, I want to prove that it can be done in a WFPB way and over 50!!Radical Consistency: By quantifying and simplifying these habits, I’m removing the guesswork. It turns my daily routine into a reliable system that keeps me “Empowered and Aligned,” even on the busiest days.
The Bigger Picture
I used to think that structure was the opposite of freedom. I’m beginning to realize that a clear and solid structure can be the foundation that allows my highest self to be built. It ensures that when I show up for my life, I am physically and mentally prepared to be fully present.
How do you handle the balance between freedom and structure in your own life? Do you find that a little bit of data helps you feel more supported, or do you prefer to keep things purely intuitive?
I’d love to hear how you navigate this in your own journey. Let me know in the comments.

I love this, Leslie! In Ashtanga Yoga there is a phrase I really love, outer structure brings inner freedom. I have found this to be true. The key is to create a structure that works for who you are and what you value. Hurray to you for finding this balance!
