I have been pondering this subject for a long time. Judging people based on looks is a complex issue. Commonly, there is a bias about weight, and while some feel it's okay to talk about it, to others it's taboo. There's the health aspect and body positivity angle that all make it quite tricky.
I'm speaking here specifically about the face. Quite often, I hear someone criticizing someone else's looks, and it always startles me. Even when a friend, referring to our dog Nuba years ago, exclaimed, "OMG, she is sooo ugly!"
Now, of course, aesthetics are a real thing (The Golden Ratio), and I don't deny that certain looks stimulate the brain more than others. What I cannot get past is that there is a BEING on the other side of those remarks.
What I hear is "that person has no worth because of their looks." In spin class this past week, someone was commenting on a celebrity who just got engaged, and a person said, "But have you seen the guy? Ugh!"
I know this is common and maybe human nature (even animals go for the “best” mate), but I hope to prompt others to remember that this is a human being with worth, no matter what. #allbeings
Interestingly in the opposite vein, I also often hear classically beautiful people FEELING that they are ugly looking. And many go through agonizing and costly procedures to change their outside.
So, there is no quick fix here, but I do hope to have nudged someone to take a pause before they "ugh" the next person.
What vibe do you want to be putting out into the world?
